Cable Insulation Aging

From Inspection Signal to Remaining Useful Life

Cables in nuclear, aerospace, defense, and utility systems can remain in service for decades. Replacing them is costly and disruptive. K-NDE by ElastoSure turns inspection signals into clear condition, defect, lifetime, and Replace / Monitor / Continue decisions.

What Is Cable Insulation Aging?

Cable insulation aging is driven by thermal oxidation, radiation-induced oxidation, hydrolysis, and mechanical fatigue from thermal cycling and vibration. The rate depends on the insulation polymer type: XLPE, EPR, neoprene, PVC, and silicone all have different aging kinetics.

The critical limitation of stand-alone FDR/TDR instruments is that they output waveforms, not diagnoses. Engineers must interpret reflection features and infer the degradation state, making the process subjective and inconsistent. K-NDE automates this interpretation with physics-based signal-to-degradation mapping.

NRC cable aging regulations (NUREG/CR-7000, 10 CFR 50) require utilities to demonstrate cable operability during extended operation. Historically, this has relied on generic assumptions and testing programs. K-NDE enables quantified, cable-specific RUL assessment from actual in-service inspection data.
